RICHMOND, Va. -- The 2002-03 Penguins were a tough watch at times, especially as the season dragged on.
I was there in the Igloo a few days before Christmas to witness Mario Lemieux's goal right off the face-off against the Sabres, and seem to recall they were still at least theoretically in the mix. But the wheels soon fell off completely.
The 16-game winless streak was nothing compared to the misfortune that would befall them the very next season, when they’d set a new record for futility and break that streak by two games. Still, any time you can look back at having ruined the season for a high-priced yet-still-miserable Rangers team, not all is lost!
